Even the oldest machine, a 15 year-old »genius«, runs on the newest software and still offers absolutely reliable and precise results thanks to its outstanding finishing quality and high-quality components. It has more than paid off. If software is the brain, then hardware is the worker – the machine controlled by the software. It has to offer a lot to stand up to the rigors of everyday production environ- ments. Only when everything works in concert, from a well-developed design to careful assembly, will devices stand up to high demands over many years. The details are what separate the wheat from the chaff – close investiga- tion before making an investment pays off. It all starts with the cladding: Are electronic components fully protected against outside dirt and dust? Is the base cushioned against vibrations and resistant to tempera- ture fluctuations? The control elements are another key consideration: Are they easy to reach, and can they be adjusted for individual users? Is there a risk of injury? Are manually movable com- ponents easy to adjust? Internal features are also key to precision and long service life: Are cables wired cleanly? Can wear parts be ex- changed easily? Is component finishing high-quality? If these questions have been answered to your satis­ faction, then the machine will fulfill all your requirements and be a reliable companion in your production processes. However, if companies don’t take a closer look when making a purchase, they might risk falling into a money pit – either because of expensive repairs, downtimes, or be- cause produced parts don’t fulfill requirements. In the worst case scenario, machines may need to be replaced after just a short time. High-quality devices, in contrast, can often remain in service for ten to twenty years or longer. Of course, they need to be calibrated and main- tained regularly – good service across the machine’s entire lifetime is essential.
